Homes that specialise in dementia care are few and far between in North Wales. It is a particularly difficult service to provide well, and more than any other form of long-term care, benefits from an environment that is designed specifically around the needs of the client.
In 2008 Fairways Care opened Glyn Menai to try to change this. Designed in consultation with the Dementia Services Development Centre at The University of Wales, this new home incorporates all the latest thinking in person-centred care. It has featured as an exemplar on the TV news, has an enviable reputation amongst health care professionals in the locality, and was short-listed as the "Best New UK Elderly Care Development" in the London 2009 Pinder's Design awards. In November 2009 it was awarded the title "Care Home of the Year 2009" at the Birmingham Care Show.
The environment has two main aims: to be secure without creating a sense of confinement; and to ensure interest and meaning to all areas. To achieve this it utilises a host of design ideas both hi-tech and simple. For clients though, the result is calming, comfortable and completely unobtrusive.

In autumn 2008 ITV produced a series of news items looking at how the challenge of dementia is met in Wales. The news team spoke to experts at the University of Bangor who in turn told them about Glyn Menai. The footage below is that news item.
Fairways would like to thank ITV for their kind permission to reproduce this footage. |
